surveyors, marine technicians, lawyers, and many others in the marine industry.
ABYC also sponsors certification courses for marine technicians in Electrical, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Diesel Engine & Support Systems, Gasoline Engine & Support Systems, Marine Corrosion, Composite Boat Building and Marine Systems.
By far and away, boat builders, repair yards and marine surveyors are the biggest users of the ABYC standards, but as a consumer, working knowledge of the standards can assist you in either completing do-it-yourself tasks in a compliant fashion, or enable you to ensure that others do the work according to these standards.
Before buying a boat, ask the dealer if it was built using ABYC standards. If having a boat surveyed, hire a surveyor that is a member of ABYC and insist that they use ABYC standards during the survey. The repair technician in your boatyard should also be an ABYC member, repairing your boat using ABYC standards.
The strategic partnership between ABYC and the ABYC Foundation results in a positive synergism that clearly benefits the industry and the boating public. Safer boats and informed boaters increase the level of enjoyment, reduce the level of risk and improve the financial health of the industry. This is the objective of the ABYC Foundation.
ABYC develops safety standards for the design, construction, equipage, maintenance, and repair of small craft and their systems. The development of uniform standards is the basis for industry-wide comparisons of products and performance. As aresult of strong industry support, ABYC's standards program is a viable alternative to further development of mandatory government regulation of the marine industry.
In lawsuits involving product liability, ABYC standards are a reliable and authoritative reference for evaluation issues of design, construction, maintenance, and product performance.
ABYC has been writing safety standards for the design, building, and repairing of boats and their systems for over 50 years. These standards are used by naval architects, boat builders, marine
